Lens swap — what to know before doing it yourself

Important guidance before swapping lenses on a Lucyd frame yourself.

If you’re thinking of swapping the lenses on your Lucyd glasses yourself (or having a local optician do it), please read this first. We want you to keep enjoying your glasses without an avoidable accident.

When DIY lens swap is OK

You can pop in a fresh set of lenses on most Lucyd frames if:

  • They’re our replacement lenses — ordered from lucyd.co and cut for your specific frame.
  • They’re a stock (non-Rx) lens type — clear, blue light, or basic sun. No alignment issues.
  • The frame is fully cooled — never try to swap when the frame is warm or just off your face.

When DIY lens swap is NOT a good idea

  • Custom prescription lenses — your Rx and PD have to be aligned to your pupils precisely. Off-center installation causes blurriness, headaches, and eye strain.
  • Progressives or bifocals — the focal zones have to land in the right vertical position. A small rotation completely throws this off.
  • Photochromic lenses (Lucyd Shift, Lucyd Blueshift) — the photochromic layer is on one side only. Installing them upside-down means they won’t tint properly outdoors.
  • High-prescription lenses (above ±5 SPH) — these are heavier and need to be seated firmly. Improper installation can crack them.

For these cases, take the frame to a local optician (most will do this for free or a small fee, especially if you’ve gotten an eye exam there). Or ship the frame to our ITFIT lab — we’ll do it for you.

Why we sometimes ship just the frame for an Rx replacement

If you’re replacing a frame under warranty and you have custom lenses installed, we’ll usually ask you to ship the original frame back to our lab. That’s because:

  1. Your custom lenses are non-refundable — you paid for the cutting and the prescription work. We don’t want you to lose that investment.
  2. Our lab can carefully pop the lenses out of the old frame and install them in the new one.
  3. The lenses are aligned to your specific eyes — re-installing yourself risks misalignment.

If you’d rather not wait for the lab turnaround, we can ship the new frame to you with new clear lenses (free) and you can attempt the swap yourself or take it to your optician. Just be aware of the alignment risks above.

How to take Lucyd to a local optician

Most opticians can handle a Lucyd lens swap if you bring:

  • Your Lucyd frame (cleaned, in its case).
  • Your prescription (printed or on your phone).
  • Any existing Lucyd lenses you want them to transfer.

If they ask: yes, the lenses come out and go back in. The smart-eyewear electronics live in the temples (arms), not in the lens housing. Swapping lenses doesn’t void your audio warranty.

If your optician is unsure: have them email info@lucyd.co and we’ll walk them through it.

Need a frame adjustment, not a lens swap?

If your Lucyd frame just needs a slight bend or adjustment (not lens replacement), most local opticians can do this for free. Bring the frame in cold — never try to bend a Lucyd frame with bare hands; the warmth and pressure can crack the audio components inside the temples.
